It almost didn't come down because of those who are more concerned about their own self-interest than the common good.
Perhaps one day, dam advocates will see how one individual played the system like a fiddle and in doing so played upon their fears and ignorance for his own gain.
To those who insisted that the dam remain: It came down for one reason -- because it would not have generated enough electricity to remain cost-effective once a proper fishway was installed. It is as simple as that.
To those who claim they are concerned with the loss of fish and wildlife habitat: The proponents of the Edwards Dam in Augusta made the same claims and those proved to be nonsense. This river will heal itself in short order after decades of abuse at the hands of man.
Hopefully, many more inefficient and environmentally harmful dams will come down in this state as we become more and more understanding of the importance of free-flowing rivers and the fish and wildlife resources that they contain.
