Soon after I walked inside, three older people, two women and one man, asked what I said to the soldier. I replied, "Thanks for serving." They all just stood there and said, "Wow."
I asked why the surprise? They said, "Every time I see someone in uniform, I freeze up and don't have the right words to say. I don't want to say the wrong thing."
They said what I said was great and it made them feel much better. They also said they all learned something tonight. I was very pleased they said that.
With all the different attitudes toward the war and the soldiers coming home, "thanks for serving" is only the right thing to say, if anything. It brings joy to every soldier I have told it to past and present.
I try to be the best I can and I hope saying those three words bring out the best in Maine citizens, respecting the Armed Forces for what they do -- Protect Our Freedom! Take care.
