Thirty-five years later and Maine is still discriminating against Vietnam veterans! It reminds me of the '60s whilst I was over there and I wrote to then-Gov. Edmund Muskie to ask what Maine was doing to help its GIs in the war -- yeah, I said war, because that's what it was.
Many states in this country provided numerous benefits and bonuses to its GIs during the period. Muskie's reply was only that Maine provided to the GIs the Togus Veterans hospital.
Well, I thought, Togus was federal -- not state-run, shame on me. Maine had done nothing for the Vietnam veterans and continues to do nothing. Certainly Gov. John Baldacci can waive the toll for the bikers escorting the Vietnam memorial. This is a sample of what the Gulf veterans will have to look forward to.
