Hallowell Day parade ruined by politics
Kennebec Journal & Morning Sentinel Wednesday, July 25, 2007

A real damper to our enjoyment of the Old Hallowell Day parade was the political agendas imposed on the crowd.

My wife and I and part of our family were there to have a good time in the community and celebrate Old Hallowell -- a great little Maine town (we even lived and worked there once). We bought a couple of "Hallowell Chairs" and ate strawberry shortcake.

We love Slates. The kicker came when (what appeared to be) a secular-progressive, far left group proudly marched by with their Bush-hating, seditious "Impeach Bush" dribblings.

First of all, that kind of politics should be left out of parades -- that's not the forum for that and if not, then, according to true Democratic policy, the Republicans, independents and otherwise patriotic, God-fearing people with different views should be included.

But this is exactly what ruined the Common Ground Fair for us and why we stopped going to that -- because of one-sided politically motivated views being put on at a family/community event without an opposing viewpoint to promote intelligent and responsible debate -- something our country was founded on.

Are you familiar with GOOGLE?
Try Googling "Social Security Trust Fund." It's easy to find...unless you're determined to make excuses for Bush at the expense of reality.report abuse

Question: I did not realize we had a Social Security Trust Fund. Is that the "lock box" that the Democrats referred to when President Bush tried to reform Social Security.

Please look for it and let me know when you find it. Or maybe it is just imaginary and used only to criticize the President.report abuse

Tim:
Sounds like you're mostly talking about the current REPUBLICAN administration:

Progressively more intrusion into people's private lives (the USA "Unpatriotic Act," warrentless wiretaps, etc.).

Progressively more freedoms taken away (Bush asserts that he has the right to imprison any American citizen without charges or a trial, forever).

Progressively more money diverted from the Social Security Trust Fund to pay for millionaires' tax cuts, the war in Iraq, etc.

Progressively more enemies created around the world by a ham-fisted foreign policy.

A progressively strained military, barely kept up to strength by the "liberal" use of progressively bigger signing and retention bonuses.report abuse

Frankly, I think the title "progressive" fits.

Progressively higher taxes

Progressively more social programs and entitlements

Progressively more government regulation

Progressively more intrusion into people's private lives

Progressively more freedoms taken away (for our own good)

Yep, "progressive" definitely is a more descriptive title.report abuse

Exactly WHAT "socialist agenda" are you talking about? And Exactly WHAT bothers you about that agenda?
Using terms like "socialist" as a "boogie man" to scare little children (or those adults with childish minds) isn't a particularly intelligent way to discuss anything. I suppose I could rant all day about right-wing conservatives and their "capitalist agenda," but I think it's a better use of my time to be a bit more specific. report abuse

The parade should be about Hallowell and pride in America. What about the children that see this? THINK ABOUT THE CHILDREN!!!!!

Reguardless of what they want to be called, they are not "progressives"! Changing their name is a brainwashing tactic.

They are nothing but "LIBERAL DEMOCRATS" wanting to control everything you do, from the right to bear arms, to the food you eat and the money you make!

Do not be fooled, these are ruthless people with a socialist agenda!report abuse

Didn't see the parade. I wonder, though, whether progressives would support the intent of the radio "Fairness Doctrine" for parades like this? report abuse
