I am painfully aware that many of my everyday habits have been degrading this planet, but I want to make improvements. I want to be able to face my grandchildren without an excess of shame, and with an enthusiasm for the future. I hope I can do this on a ski trail that has some snow on it.
We may still be capable of adapting to the immutable laws of nature. In a Frank and Earnest cartoon, this exchange occurs, "What do you think of evolution?" "I think it's worth a try."
I think it is worth a try. We are part of a grand experiment, and we should remember that about 95 percent of the species that have ever existed on Earth are extinct, mismatched with the larger changing forces of their environment. What will be our fate? Are we living in a sustainable manner? As individuals and as a culture, we have opportunities and choices along the way. One of them is before LURC now. We have a tradition in Maine of independence and self-sufficiency. Let's honor that by making clean electricity from the wind. I hope the LURC Board members approve this project -- to improve our quality of life, and our chances of survival.
