After months of analysis, we came out in strong support of this project in August and our support has not wavered since.
Why is the Lung Association interested in wind energy? The answer is simple: Burning fossil fuels, like those used to run our energy and transportation systems, produces air pollution.
Air pollution can produce serious negative health effects, especially for the more than 150,000 Maine people with lung disease.
If nothing is done to reduce these harmful emissions, the health risk to Maine people will increase every year. Corrective action will require a sustained and aggressive effort to develop healthy, renewable power.
There are limited areas where commercially viable projects can be located.
We need to take advantage of every possible option because it would take over 100 Redington Projects to replace the fossil fuel-based energy currently consumed in Maine.
Redington is an important step and the American Lung Association of Maine urges the LURC commissioners to join the American Lung Association of Maine in supporting the Redington Wind Farm Project.
