Editorials from Friday's Kennebec Journal:
Herring fishery too important to risk its vigor
If the New England Fishery Management Council made a mistake by recommending that federal regulators reduce the catch of herring by 45 percent next year, they erred on the side of necessary caution.
Columns from Friday's Kennebec Journal:
DENIS THOET : Small town is great place to live even if rough around the edges
Our farm is in a great location, East of the Moon, West of Gardiner.
Letters from Friday's Kennebec Journal:
Jacoby the husky is missing; please help bring him home
Five days before Halloween, I lost my dog Jacoby. He left our Winthrop home in the middle of the night and did not return.
A plea to keep Gardiner crematorium-free
Gardiner's mission statement includes, "A promise to value and preserve community assets of natural, cultural and social importance." It does not include the intention to welcome incinerators to our neighborhoods for the purpose of cremating human remains.
Pushy political efforts often counterproductive
Hooray! Voting season has thankfully ended, at least for a little while.
Counselor has made himself unavailable to students
I agree that Don Mendell's opposition to same-sex marriage constitutes grounds for revoking his social work license.
Topic of crematorium is not 'laughable' subject
I attended the Gardiner City Council meeting on Nov. 4 and heard the discussion about the proposed crematorium.
Don't forget, many voted 'no' on Question 1
I felt the need to comment on the letter written by Dr. John Brion and Dave Thomas (Nov. 11). They had planned a vacation in Maine but now have decided to go somewhere else due to the results of the gay marriage vote being defeated in Maine.
Those with no sick days threaten public health
I grew up in Hallowell but left Maine to go to college. I recently returned with my husband and daughter because this is a wonderful place to raise our family.
How does survival rate of salmon types compare?
I read the interesting article, "Salmon Return to the Sheepscot," that stated that 65 salmon adults were released in the river. They had been collected earlier in the river as juveniles. I think that having come from the same genetic stock is extremely important.
'Bigotry is ugly no matter what form it takes'
I woke up on Nov. 4, heard the news and cried. I can't believe that in this world filled with hate and sadness that we would discourage loving, committed relationships.
Evidence of Dechaine's innocence compelling
The state's case against Dennis Dechaine boils down to the fact that items, accessible to anyone, were removed from Dechaine's truck, and to the desperately held hope at the attorney general's office that Dechaine is guilty.
Majority has spoken -- in favor of discrimination
Throughout history, the majority electorate has supported discrimination against a variety of groups. Hopefully, the Legislature will pass another law prohibiting discrimination against same-sex couples desiring to marry.
Only 1 space to check to register 'no' vote
Yes, Sarah Rogers (letter, Nov. 6) of Fairfield, I am also ashamed of being a Maine resident. I wanted to vote "no, no, no" but there was only a space to check "no."
