MANCHESTER, Conn. -- If she had to run it again, Maranacook Community High School sophomore Abby Mace would do a few things differently.

"I would push it harder in the second mile," Mace said. "I had too much left in the end."

Still, Mace battled tough conditions to turn in a strong performance at the New England cross country championships Saturday. Mace finished 10th with a time of 19 minutes, 7 seconds.

Cheverus sophomore Emily Durgin won with a time of 18:35.

On the boys side, Mt. Blue senior Kelton Cullenberg also finished 10th in 16:37. Cony senior Luke Fontaine was 30th with a time of 17:01.

"I was 40th with about 200 or 300 meters left, and then I picked off 10 kids," Fontaine said. "I was happy about that. Finishing 30th isn't too bad. I stayed about even. I felt decent about the race."

As did Mace.

"I thought the time was good considering the conditions," she said. "The course was muddy and wet. It was definitley harder than normal."

John Raneri of New Fairfield, Conn., won the boys race in 15:57. Will Geoghegan of Brunswick finished third (16:13).

Football

Kents Hill 28, Hebron Academy 26: The Huskies finished a frustrating season with a win against its oldest rival. Oshee Brown caught a 90-yard touchdown pass on a trick play and then returned a fumble 4 yards for another score to lead the Huskies (3-5).

Farmingdale native Ryan Dorso rushed for 200 yards and two touchdowns to lead Kents Hill. He scored the game-winning touchdown on a 7-yard rush to snap a 20-20 game with seven minutes left.

Hebron (2-6) scored a touchdown with three minutes left, but came up short on the two-point conversion.

"It made the season," first-year Kents Hill coach Steve Gritti said. "It was nice to see us win the biggest game of the year."

Boys soccer

Kents Hill 2, Hebron 1 (PKs): Patrick Huard, Dylan Rich and Alec Bolduc all scored as the Huskies beat Hebron in penalty kicks to win the Maine Association of Independent Schools Athletic Directors championship on their home field.

John Fessenden assisted on Ethan Ford's goal four minutes before halftime as Kents Hill (10-2-1) took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Hebron (9-6-0) countered with Sang Il Min's goal with 10 minutes, 49 seconds left in regulation.

After two five-minute overtimes and two five-minute, sudden-death overtime periods, the game went to penalty kicks, where goalie Jake Cockrell (eight saves) helped seal the victory.

Today, the Huskies will learn whether they earned a berth in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council's Class C tournament.
