DIXFIELD -- The Winthrop High School football team this week acknowledged it would need a near-perfect performance to upend Dirigo in the Campbell Conference Class C semifinals.

Saturday at Harlow Park, the Ramblers were far too flawed to spring a surprise on the unblemished Cougars.

Top-seeded Dirigo (10-0) scored two first-quarter touchdowns off turnovers and cruised to a 26-0 win against No. 5 Winthrop (6-4).

The Cougars, who matched their single-season school record in victories, will play upstart Yarmouth (8-2) in the conference championship game at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

"Winthrop has beat us in every sport -- basketball, baseball and football," said Dirigo quarterback Nic Crutchfield, who threw two touchdown passes. "We knew we had to beat them. We wanted to beat Winthrop in a sport. It was a real emotional day for us."

As it was for Winthrop, the defending conference champs whose reign came to a halt before about 500 spectators.

"We did the things we thought we could do, but we just couldn't score," Winthrop coach Joel Stoneton said. "But the kids can't be ashamed of themselves because they had a great season. But, obviously, it's disappointing every time you lose."

The Ramblers also lost senior end Cory Staples to a concussion early in the second quarter. Staples was injured while sacking Crutchfield and was taken by ambulance to Rumford Hospital. Paramedics at the scene said Staples suffered a "blow to the head" but was cognizant. Stoneton said after the game that Staples was alert and resting in the hospital.

Dirigo, which earned its first postseason victories in school history this fall, scored the only points it would need when Spencer Ross rushed for a 59-yard touchdown with 3 minutes, 57 seconds left in the first quarter.

Crutchfield set up the touchdown when he intercepted a Winthrop quarterback Travis Luce pass on the previous play.

"I actually lost coverage on my guy and I turned around and saw where the quarterback was rolling out to," Crutchfield said. "When the ball was in the air, I kind of stuck my hands out and the ball went in my hand."

Added Luce: "I thought I could float it over him but I couldn't do it. It was a big play. It was deflating."

Trailing 6-0, the Ramblers turned the ball over on its ensuing possession and the result was equally catastrophic.

Cory Harris, who rushed for a game-high 118 yards on 21 carries, fumbled the ball and Dirigo senior Kyle Hutchinson picked it up and ran 37 yards for the touchdown.

"It was frustrating," Harris said. "We were successful running the ball but we just couldn't score."

Added fellow senior Tyler Arsenault: "We just let up two quick touchdowns that blew the wind out of our sails. We tried to bounce back from that, but it was too tough."

The Cougars scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter -- both on Crutchfield passes -- to put the game out of reach.

"Defensively, we played well but we needed a few stops and we couldn't do it," Winthrop senior tackle Dane Gomberg said. "They are a big-play team and when things go wrong, they know what to do."

The Ramblers moved the ball well at times, but got inside the Dirigo 30 just twice. Ryan Conant rushed for 72 yards to lead the offense with Harris.

The Ramblers' best scoring chance came on their first possession of the second half. Winthrop started at its own 14 and drove to the Dirigo 5. On fourth-and-3, however, Harris was stopped short.

"I wish we hadn't made some mental mistakes and turnovers," Winthrop wide receiver and defensive back Arsenault said. "But we regrouped in the second half. We didn't let Dirigo score a point."

By then, it was simply too late.

"We had a lot of yards but we just couldn't put the ball in the end zone," Luce said. "Once they had momentum going they never stopped."
