FAIRFIELD -- Lawrence had its running game taken away and had to find a way to stop Rashon Edgerton.
Led by one of the top running backs in the state in Christian Powers, Lawrence was held to just 42 yards rushing in the second half. Meanwhile, Edgerton, Brunswick's multi-talented wide receiver/running back took the game over, catching a touchdown pass and throwing a touchdown pass.
It all led to a Brunswick upset over Lawrence, 27-14 in a Pine Tree Conference Class A semifinal football game at Keyes Field.
"They knew they had to stop our running game and they did," said Powers, who rushed for 1,207 yards in the regular season but was held to just 83 yards against Brunswick. "We couldn't run sweep and iso was only going for four yards every play."
No. 3 Brunswick improves to 9-1 and advances to play in the PTC A final against No. 1 Bangor. No. 2 Lawrence ends the season at 8-2.
Lawrence had momentum and looked to be in control of the game when it took a 14-7 lead on a 16-yard TD run by Powers, but Brunswick responded with a big play on its ensuing drive. Facing a third-and-17 from their own 42, Dylan Walton broke a 57-yard run before being tackled at the 1. Quarterback Stephan Jensen snuck in for the score and Edgerton kicked the extra point to tie the game before the half.
"That helped our momentum a lot because they had scored 14 straight points," Edgerton said. "To go in with a tie game was huge for us."
From that point, Edgerton made big play after big play and the Dragons defense shut down Lawrence.
The Bulldogs actually drove to the Brunswick 11 on their first drive of the second half, but Nick Votta intercepted Bobby Belanger and Brunswick took over on its own 20. Edgerton converted on a third-and-2 from the Brunswick 49, stretching for the first down. He then caught two passes for 32 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown pass with 3:45 left in the third. Edgerton kicked the conversion to give Brunswick a 21-14 lead.
Brunswick gave up one first down on Lawrence's ensuing drive, but forced a fumble and took over on their own 32 late in the third quarter.
Facing a third-and-16 from the Lawrence 43, Edgerton took a handoff and ran toward the right sideline.
When the Lawrence defense bought run, Edgerton threw it over the defense to Walton to give Brunswick a 13-point lead.
"He's quite an athlete," Lawrence coach John Hersom said. "Having not seen him, they were able to hurt us on a couple of things we probably hadn't prepared for. The long halfback pass was probably something they saved for a while. That was a good play call."
Down 13, Lawrence was forced to throw the ball, and was unable to sustain any drives. John Williams, who played a key role for Brunswick from his defensive end position, picked off a pass in the final seconds to seal the victory.
"We have really good linebackers and our defensive line was getting great penetration," Edgerton said.
Brunswick took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 13-yard run by Edgerton, who finished with 69 yards rushing, 32 yards receiving and 43 yards passing. Lawrence tied it on a 5-yard pass from Belanger to Mark Yandian early in the second quarter.
Belanger finished 16 for 28 passing for 198 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.
