BIG DAY: Richmond captain Eric Murrin, left, has a shot blocked by Greenville goalie Alex Jardine during the Western Maine Class D championship game Wednesday afternoon in Richmond. Murrin scored four times in the Bobcats’ 6-2 victory against the Greenville Lakers.
RICHMOND -- Eric Murrin and his Richmond teammates peppered the Greenville goal with shots Wednesday afternoon, just like they did when the teams met a month ago.

This time, though, with a berth in Saturday's Class D soccer state championship game on the line, the Bobcats finished. Murrin scored four goals to lead Richmond to a 6-2 victory and its fifth straight Western Maine Class D title.

The top-seeded Bobcats (13-2-0) will play Eastern Maine champion Bangor Christian at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hampden Academy. Second-seeded Greenville finished 9-4-1.

When the teams met last month, the Bobcats outshot the Lakers 18-5 but still lost 2-1 against a Greenville defense that packed itself in front of the Richmond goal.

"We practiced (this week) with 10 guys in the box and five guys outside the box," Murrin said. "We practiced shooting outside the 18 and cleaning it up. That's how we got it done today."

Murrin scored on the game's first shot just four minutes into the game when his blast from 20 yards beat Greenville keeper Alex Jardine to the upper right corner.

"I was trying to bend it far post and (Jardine) had his back turned to me," Murrin said. "It just skipped off his back and in."

Richmond's next shot found the back of the net as well, this one off the foot of Nick Woods who drilled a shot from 20 yards into the upper left corner. Despite the wet, muddy field, the Bobcats were able to control the ball along the ground.

"The boys have grown up playing that short passing game," Richmond coach Joe Scribellito said. "We pretty much insist on that style from middle school on up."

Murrin scored his second goal of the game, with Woods assisting, at the 23-minute mark to make it 3-0. Meanwhile, the Bobcats did a good job keeping the Lakers away from the ball.

"I don't think we expected to lose the last game," senior midfielder Josh Rice said. "This game we knew what they could do. They took us early last time and we knew we had to come out strong."

Richmond did a nice job marking Greenville junior Tony DiAngelo, who scored both goals in the last meeting. He did get away once, though, and fed a nice pass along the end line to Dylan Bouchard for a point blank shot into the net to make it 3-1 at the half. The Bobcats outshot the Lakers 21-3 for the game but two of Greenville's shots went in.

By the time the Lakers scored again -- on a shot by Emerson Sikes -- the Bobcats led 5-1 and Murrin had two more goals. He got his hat trick off a nice through pass from Rice and added his fourth goal when he headed in a corner kick from Joey Scribellito.

The four goals gave the senior striker 30 this season.

"The kid's a finisher," Coach Scribellito said. "He's a striker. You want to find kids in that position that are going to finish."

The Bobcats wrapped up the scoring when Scribellito placed anther corner kick on the head of 6-foot-5 junior Kyle O'Brien.

Richmond has lost three of the last four state championship games, falling 5-4 to Katahdin last year. The Bobcats beat Ashland two years ago. And four years ago, when their run began, they lost to Bangor Christian.

"This team fights and claws and scraps its way along," Coach Scribellito said. "We're probably not going to be the favorite going into the states this year, but we're going to give the team that comes from the East a good match."
