Tuesday afternoon was no different when the Black Bears hosted Mountain Valley in a Western Maine Class B quarterfinal game. Maranacook recently welcomed Sarah Maffei, Brynna Bedard and Sarah Pokorny back from injury but during the game lost midfielder Isabel Smith.
Despite all the lineup shuffling, Maranacook is moving onto the regional semifinals thanks to a 2-0 win.
"We are actually getting a few players back from injury so the team chemistry was off a little bit on the field," Maranacook coach Peter Poulin said. ". . . It wasn't one of our better games because we are working people back into the lineup."
No. 3 Maranacook improves to 10-3-2 and advances to play at No. 2 Falmouth in the semifinals Saturday. No. 6 Mountain Valley ends the season at 5-7-3.
Despite the adjustments to their changing lineup, Maranacook got off to a quick start when Hannah Cumler entered the game and scored about 10 seconds later. Katie Dore sent a long cross that went through the penalty area untouched. Cumler crashed the net and redirected the shot in to put Maranacook up 1-0 with 27 minutes, 10 seconds left in the first.
"I think it was good (to get an early lead) because it helped our confidence," Bedard said.
The Black Bears made it 2-0 when Amanda Findlay scored on a long shot that beat goalie Breana Roberts to her right with 15:45 left in the half.
That was all Maranacook needed. The Black Bears defense kept Mountain Valley from creating much offense all day. The Falcons had just one quality opportunity in the second half, when a corner kick found its way into a crowd in front of Maranacook goalie Katie Smith, who was shielded from the ball. The Black Bears cleared the ball and snuffed out any other scoring chances for Mountain Valley.
"I think we played pretty well as a team defensively," Maranacook sweeper Hannah Caswell said. "We pulled up on them a lot."
