BAR HARBOR -- Waterville Senior High School went for a two-point conversion and the victory with one-tenth of a second to play Friday night in its Pine Tree Conference Class B quarterfinal game.
The Purple Panthers didn't get it and lost 28-27 to Mt. Desert Island.
The Trojans (7-1) -- who won the regular-season meeting 35-14 in Week 3 -- used a grinding ground attack to move 60 yards on 16 plays, with Tyler Crawford finding a wide-open Nolin Hall in the end zone to make it 28-21 with 30 seconds left.
Waterville (3-5), though, got a last-gasp score, with quarterback Kyle Bishop hitting Josh Gaudette for a touchdown with a tenth of a second on the clock.
Waterville opted to go for two and the win right there, rather than taking a chance on overtime. But Terrence Jones batted down the pass at the goal line, preserving the MDI victory.
Jones ran for 110 yards on 12 carries to lead MDI.
Kris Huggins, who pounded MDI for more than 160 yards in the teams' earlier meeting, had 137 yards on 24 carries Friday night. Bishop completed 11 of 16 passes for 145 yards.
While the Purple Panthers dominated time of possession in the first half, they managed to get into the end zone just once. MDI then finally got its offense going late after halftime.
After going three and out on their opening possession, the Trojans punted, giving Waterville the ball near midfield. The Purple Panthers drove to the Trojans' 18, but after a reverse went awry and a 13-yard sack on fourth down by Nate Ward, MDI took the ball at its 39.
Terrence Jones promptly burst into the open on MDI's first play of the possession, racing 61 yards to give the Trojans a 6-0 lead.
After a partially blocked punt, Bishop hit tight end J.D. Gurski for a 19-yard touchdown that made it 7-6.
Following an interception near the MDI 40, Waterville had a chance for another score with less than a minute before halftime. But MDI's Jasper Cousins picked up a Bishop fumble and raced 45 yards down the sideline for a score -- his fourth defensive touchdown in as many games. After the two-point conversion on a run by Jones, MDI went into the break up 14-7.
Waterville tied it up within three minutes, needing just five plays to score, with Huggins rumbling in from 8 yards out. MDI faltered again on offense, and Waterville drove into Trojan territory again only to fumble for the third time of the night.
MDI made Waterville pay, driving 58 yards in 13 plays, with Jones breaking a 25-yard run on a key third-and-12 before Odane Gaynor ran in from 8 yards out to make it 21-14
