HIGH SCHOOL FIELD HOCKEY: Gardiner shuts out Morse in opener

GARDINER -- Ashley Work scored two first-half goals, which proved to be enough as the Gardiner field hockey team blanked Morse 3-0 in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A season-opener for both teams Friday.

Lauren Gorham added a goal off a penalty corner in the second half to complete the scoring. Kaitlyn Morissette (two saves) and Alley Beaulieu (one save) each played one half in the shutout.

Gardiner finished with 19 penalty corners to none for Morse.

Winthrop 2, Georges Valley 1: Allyce McQuillian scored her first varsity goal in the second half as the Ramblers beat the Buccaneers in their Mountain Valley Conference opener in Winthrop.

Alicia Johnston gave Georges Valley a 1-0 lead in the first half. Kenzie Hill tied it for Winthrop later in the half.

Ciara Smally had 18 saves for Georges Valley.

Cony 1, Mt. Blue 0: Brittany Ford scored on a scramble in front of the net to give the Rams the season-opening KVAC A win in Farmington.

After three shots were stopped by Mt. Blue goalie Amanda Hall, Ford's shot snuck through. Kayla Belanger assisted. Felicia Taylor made eight saves for Cony (1-0-0) while Amanda Hall stopped six for Mt. Blue (0-1-0).

Hall-Dale 3, Boothbay 2: Jess Woods assisted on Brittney Veilleux's first-half goals that staked the Bulldogs to a 2-0 halftime lead in their MVC victory in Farmingdale.

Veilleux later assisted on Abby Crocker's goal that made it 3-1 only 20 seconds after Boothbay scored its first goal of the game.

Megan Daigle finished with 15 saves for Hall-Dale.

Girls soccer

Gardiner 2, Lincoln Academy 2, OT: Stephanie Eaton scored on a penalty kick in the first half and scored an unassisted goal with 18 minutes left to tie the game for the Tigers, in Newcastle.

Sarah Komorowski and Brooke Cheney scored in the first half for Lincoln Academy.

Kayla Marks had 16 saves for Gardiner, while Emma Lazzari had 17 saves for Lincoln.

Erskine 10, Mt. View 0: Brittney Doughty had two goals and two assists as the Eagles cruised to a season-opening victory over the Mustangs in South China.

Callie Thompson added a goal and two assists, while Megan Thompson and Brooke Glidden each added a goal and an assist. Paige Plummer, Amanda Tower, Katie Morissette, Megan Helm and Nicole Bernhardt also had goals for Erskine.

Carolyn Steeves had five saves for Mt. View.

Maranacook 1, MCI 0: Emily Kaley beat the goalie to the ball, then put it in the back of the net during the first half to provide the Black Bears with the only score they needed to win their opening game in Pittsfield.

Kaley took a crossing pass down the middle from Lyndsay Cochran, then beat MCI goalie Alana Oliver, who made 18 saves.

Kristina Kelly finished with five saves for Maranacook.

Richmond 6, GPC 1: Danica Hurley had two goals and an assist to lead Richmond to victory in its debut.

Danielle Woodward, Leandra Martin, Danielle Bunikis and Kaitlyn McAulisse also scored goals for the Bobcats (1-0-0), who got 10 saves from goalie Lindsy Hoopingarner -- that included two penalty shots.

Richmond led 4-1 at halftime.

Cony 4, Oxford Hills 0: Forward Cassie Diplock scored two goals, while Macy Pagurko and Olivia Boivin each had one as the Rams won their KVAC A season opener in Augusta.

Goalie Amy Jones made nine saves for Cony. Breana Martin finished with three saves in the loss.

Messalonskee 2, Hampden 0: Forward Katie Grenier and midfielder Ari Perry both scored on plays assisted by Ali Omsberg as the Eagles won their opening game in Oakland.

Sara Jacques finished with 11 saves for Messalonskee. Chelsea Kuzio made eight saves in the loss.

Winthrop 0, Madison 0: The Ramblers outshot the Bulldogs 13-8 but neither team could score in a MVC opener. Anna Smithgall made three saves for Winthrop (0-0-1) while Terri Hayden stopped 14 shots for Madison (0-0-1).

Mt. Abram 8, Monmouth 1: Emma James scored three goals to lead the Roadrunners to the MVC win in Monmouth.

Rebecca London, Kaylie Rolpiecki, Molly McCafferty, Emily Eames and Helen Williams each scored a goal for Mt. Abram (1-0-0). Kenni Norton made two saves.

Emily Benoit scored the goal for Monmouth (0-1-0). Kelsie Hilton stopped five shots.
