Both repeated match play wins from a year ago in their divisions in the annual tournament that brings together the best junior golfers in the state.
The big difference for the 17-year-olds, compared to last year, was that both were coming off wins in the state amateur against established players. Rancourt won the women's state amateur Wednesday at Bangor Municipal Golf Course while Gay won the men's state amateur July 10 at Biddeford-Saco Country Club.
"Three wins in two weeks," said Rancourt, who won the Southern Maine Women's Golf Association title on July 29. "It's nice to come back and win the junior title."
Gay echoed the same sentiments in winning for the second straight year. It was their swan songs in this tournament.
"I'm looking forward to playing a complete amateur schedule next fall," said Gay, who is being recruited by several Division I college programs.
Seth Sweet of Madison won the 13-14 division, by beating Sam Grindle of Island Falls 3 and 2. Sweet lost in the finals of this division a year ago, but two years ago won the 12 and under division.
Heavily favored, Gay and Rancourt lived up to their status by being under par when their matches ended and achieve comfortable wins.
Rancourt of South Portland won the senior girls division with a 5 and 4 victory against Kate Merrill of Portland. Rancourt, who attends the David Leadbetter Academy in Bradenton, Fla., was 4-under par when the match ended on the 14th hole. Like Rancourt, Merrill played in the three-day women's amateur this week.
Gay beat Tim Millett of Auburn 6 and 5 in the 15-17 year old division. The Gardiner High senior was 3-under when the match ended on the 13th.
"I hit the ball real solidly and I didn't make any mistakes," said Gay, who will play in next week's Maine Open at Fox Ridge Golf Course in Auburn.
Both Gay and Rancourt hit many outstanding shots in their final wins. On the sixth hole, Gay hit a big drive on the 390-yard hole and then hit a low second shot with plenty of spin that stopped a foot away from the hole for an easy birdie.
Rancourt hit a impressive long iron on her second shot at No. 13 that led to a 2-putt par and a win on the next to last hole of her match with Merrill.
Rancourt won the ninth hole to take a 3-up lead and then rolled in a birdie putt on 10 to pad her lead. Rancourt said she liked putting on the wet greens Thursday.
Gay will be a member of the seven player Maine junior team that will complete in the New England Junior Tournament in two weeks in Rhode Island.
Rancourt will play in the Massachusetts Women's Open, starting next Tuesday in Ipswich, Mass.
