Calder, skiing in just his second race this season after bad weather forced cancellations the past two weeks, roared through the gates to lay down a combined two-run time of 57.11, on an extremely fast course. Camden Hills' Andrew Baxter won the event in 56.55.
"I wasn't expecting to do this well, everything felt great," Calder said.
"I went all out at the top and tried to hold back a little through the middle of the race. This is a great boost to my confidence."
Skowhegan earned a third-place finish in a field of eight teams. A young Maranacook finished second to Yarmouth, which swept the boys and girls meets.
Calder's teammates claimed top 20 finishes to help the Indians to a solid effort. Konnor Therriault (12th), Sam Gates (17th), and Sebastien Dumont (20th) also had strong runs for the Indians.
The Yarmouth boys upended Maranacook 23-34, but the Black Bears showed why coach Ronn Gifford is excited about this season's squad. Top skier Sean Vallant missed a gate on his first run then was disqualified during his second, leaving Maranacook looking to make up ground.
Sam Pelletier and Jackson Witherill picked up the slack, finishing in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
Close behind was Sean Diagle in 10th, and Adam Thompson in 14th.
"Our boys skied extremely well," Gifford said. "This is what I have been hoping for, we have four guys who make up a nice pack of skiers and hopefully they will get better as the season goes along."
Yarmouth's Lauren Stackhouse had two horrible races in the Class B state championships while watching her teammates win the state title.
This season Stackhouse is primed for success, winning Saturday's slalom race by more than three seconds.
"I felt good about my two runs," Stackhouse said.
"Today, you had to really lean forward and look ahead at the course, you had to think about what you wanted to do. The course was packed powder and turnable, it was nothing different than what we raced on last year."
Stackhouse finished in 1:02.23 while teammate Chelsea Eddy was second in 1:05.89.
Maranacook's Kayla Brown claimed 6th with a two-run time of 1:09.27, while Monmouth's Brittany Rogers was 11th in 1:18.01.
