The Mt. Blue High School boys and girls won team titles on a day when there were several intriguing individual matchups.
Several of Maine's top high school classical skiers, including Maranacook's Sam Whittemore, Oxford Hills' Spencer Eusden, Leavitt's Jutin Fereshetian and Mt. Blue's Welly Ramsey, competed against each other in the first wave of the boys race.
In the girls' race, two Mt. Blue freshmen, Shelby Aseltine and Hannah Allen, battled with Maranacook senior Jen Monsulick and Messalonskee senior Lindsay Mathes for top honors. Aseltine earned her first high school win followed closely by Monsulick, Allen and Mathes.
Saturday, in a 5k classical race at Black Mountain, Fereshetian outdistanced Ramsey by four seconds. Tuesday was a different story as Ramsey flew through his home course (7.5 kilometers) to outrun teammate Adam Fissette by 31 seconds. Eusden was third and Fereshetian fourth.
Ramsey initially started the race working to stay even with Fereshetian, but when he realized this was his day, he left the field without glancing back.
"I wanted to stay with Justin and we started out side-by-side," Ramsey said. "I thought it would help set the pace and then I would go from there, but I felt good and the course was icy and fast, so I went as fast as I could."
Ramsey completed the course in 25:56.4, followed by Fissette's 26:25.6. Eusden crossed the finish line in 26:47.8 and Fereshetian at 26:48.2. Maranacook's Sam Whittemore took eighth in 27:52.6 followed by Winthrop's Danny Soltan in ninth at 28:00.6.
"I really like the classical race," Whittemore said. "I tried to stay strong and do a lot of double poling and then carry my speed into the hills."
Mt. Blue finished with a team score of 15.
Six points seperated the next three spots with Leavitt finishing second with 52, followed by Winthrop with 56 and Maranacook with 58.
In the girls' race, Aseltine edged Monsulick by less than 10 seconds with Allen running a close third.
Aseltine and Monsulick started in the first wave of skiers, Allen was in the second group and Mathes in the fourth.
"My coach (Byron Davis) always says if you are the leader in a wave race then you have to set the bar at a higher level because you never know how everyone else is doing in the race," Aseltine said. "So that's what I tried to do."
Aseltine's winning time of 32:00.4 helped provide Mt. Blue with a final team score of 20. Leavitt was second with 43 and Maranacook third with 48.
