Godomsky resigns as Mules' ski coach

When Mark Godomsky leaves Colby College this summer to become the Director of Gould Academy's ski racing program, he'll definitely leave the Mules' Alpine program in much better shape than he found it.

Godomsky leaves Colby after 13 years. Under his tutelage, the Alpine program grew from infancy to one that has produced All-American skiers and a national champion in recent years. Godomsky takes over the Gould ski program on Aug. 1.

"When I got hired at Colby, there was virtually no ski program," said Godomsky, a Farmington native and graduate of Carrabassett Valley Academy. "I set out to see where we could go with it."

In 2006, Godomsky coached Abbi Lathrop to the NCAA Division I giant slalom championship. Abbi's twin sister, Jenny, and Warner Nickerson both skied for Godomsky at Colby and are currently on the U.S. Ski Team.

"Of all the NCAA programs, only Dartmouth has two kids on the U.S. team," Godomsky said. "Kids now have Colby on their radar. It's a school they come to visit. It's time to turn it over to someone else."

One of Godomsky's goals at Gould is to keep the pipeline between the school and Maine's collegiate ski teams open.

"If you went through my (Colby) roster five, six years ago, we had four or five Gould kids. Recently it's been more CVA kids," Godomsky said. "If you didn't have Maine kids, you wouldn't have good college teams."

Mark Serdjenian, Colby's men's soccer head coach for 31 years, moves to a full-time head coaching position with the Mules next fall.

Serdjenian, a 1973 graduate of Colby, has been the men's soccer coach on a part-time basis while working in the Colby Dean of Students office as the Associate Dean of Students for Academics and Director of Advising.

Serdjenian's other duties in the Colby Department of Athletics will be as a second assistant coach for the Colby men's lacrosse team and an academic liaison for Colby student-athletes.

"I've found my time as academic dean to be tremendously rewarding, and working with students wonderful," Serdjenian said.

"The demands of coaching in NESCAC are now such that more time needs to be devoted to that area, so this move comes as a big plus for the men's soccer program."

Serdjenian heads into his 32nd year of coaching with a 221-178-37 career record, including a 6-5-3 mark last season.

A goalkeeper during his playing days at Colby, Serdjenian was a co-captain of the Mules during his senior season. He was an all-Maine goalkeeper in his final three years at Colby.

The top four scorers on the Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse team all have ties to central Maine, and three of them accounted for all the Mariners' goals in Tuesday's 14-5 loss against the University of Southern Maine at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland.

Nate Bolduc and Garrett Lake, both graduates of Mt. Blue High School, scored two goals each against the Huskies. Skowhegan's Brandon Hamilton also scored a goal for MMA and assisted on another.

Lake leads the Mariners (2-5) with 13 goals and one assist. Bolduc has 11 goals and five assists, while Hamilton has nine goals and five assists. Messalonskee graduate Luke McPartlin has eight goals and five assists for the Mariners.

The Mariners have three games left in the regular season, all on the road. MMA will play at Becker on Thursday and at Emerson on Saturday in North Atlantic Conference games before playing at Johnson (Vt.) State on April 21.

Colby graduate Dan Oliphant's goal of playing professional football is on hold. Oliphant, a 6-foot-5, 315-pound offensive lineman, was recently waived by the Cologne Centurians of NFL Europa and released from a future's contract by the Baltimore Ravens.

Oliphant was a two-time all-New England Small College Athletic Conference selection at offensive tackle while at Colby and a team captain in 2005.

In February, Oliphant signed with the Ravens. In March, he was drafted by Cologne.

Former Portland High School and Boston College quarterback Quintin Porter, who was the Houston Texans' third quarterback for the final five regular season games last season, is on Cologne's roster for Saturday's season opener against Hamburg.
