COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Maine comes up short against JMU

ORONO -- Griff Yancey scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns as No. 1-ranked James Madison pulled away from the University of Maine in a Colonial Athletic Association football game 24-10 Saturday at Alfond Stadium.

Trailing 10-3 early in the fourth quarter, Maine tied the game on a 35-yard TD run by Derek Session and a PAT by Brian Harvey with 13:23 left. Yancey scored 1:02 later on a 12-yard run and Dave Stannard's PAT made it 17-10. Yancey added a 30-yard run with 3:39 remaining in the game to seal the win for James Madison.

In the first quarter, Harvey kicked a 27-yard field goal to give Maine a 3-0 lead. Stannard answered with a 26-yard field goal in the second half and the game was tied 3-3 at halftime.

Rodney Landers scored on a 30-yard run with 4:18 left in the third quarter to give James Madison (4-1, 2-0 in the CAA) its first lead of the game. Landers finished with 174 yards rushing on 27 carries for James Madison. Yancey rushed 10 times for 65 yards and Eugene Holloman rushed 14 times for 94 yards.

Lewiston High School graduate Jared Turcotte finished with a team-high 82 yards on 11 carries for the Black Bears (2-3, 0-2 in the CAA). Quarterback Adam Farkes completed 16 of 32 pases for 168 yards.

Mt. Blue High School graduate Jordan Stevens had three total tackles for the Black Bears, including one solo tackle.

Maine Maritime 41, Bridgewater State 31: Junior running back Jim Bower ran for a game-high 225 yards on only 18 carries and scored three touchdowns, including one for 85 yards, as the Mariners improved to 2-2 with a win against Bridgewater State College. Winslow's Cory Bezanson had five kick returns for 131 yards for MMA (2-2). Maine Maritime Academy compiled 452 yards (370 rushing) while the Bears' attack totaled 370 yards, including 320 on the ground.

American International 35, Husson 7: The Eagles scored on their first play from scrimmage, but the Yellow Jackets (4-0) scored five unanswered touchdowns to win in Springfield, Mass. Husson (2-2) went up 7-0 just 13 seconds into the game when James McCandles hit James Dobson with a 69-yard touchdown pass. But the Eagles would gain just 83 yards the rest of the game. Dobson had two catches for 68 yards and Winslow grad Ben Grant caught two passes for 38 yards. Lawrence grad Jack Hersom was 0-for-1 passing.

Tufts 34, Bates 7: The Jumbos scored on a 60-yard run by Will Forde, a 71-yard pass from quarterback Anthony Fucillo to Stephen Black and a 48-yard interception return on their way to a New England Small College Athletic Conference win in Somerville, Mass.

Amherst 31, Bowdoin 24: Amherst (2-0) rushed for 278 yards, including 121 by Aaron Rauh, to take the NESCAC win in Brunswick.
