WATERVILLE -- The Colby College men's soccer team opened its season with a convincing 3-0 victory Saturday afternoon against Maine Maritime Academy in a non-conference game.
Peter Randall scored the game-winning goal off a pass from Scott Brown at 32 minutes, 35 seconds of the first half. Josh Lyvers and senior midfielder Andrew Cheit added the other for the Mules.
Dan Marden and Doug Sibor each played a half in net for Colby, although neither needed to make a save.
Bowdoin 2, UMaine-Farmington 1: Hugh Fleming and Greg Frechette scored goals to lead Bowdoin past UMF.
The Polar Bears outshot the visitors 23-1.
UMF goalie Brian Lemont stopped 11 shots.
Women's cross country
Colby 31, Bates 29: Mandy Ivey helped the Colby College women's cross country team open the season with a victory over Bates College in the Class Wave Relay Carnival at Pineland Farms.
Ivey finished the 2.33-mile course in 13 minutes, 53 seconds.
Katrina Gravel finished third in 14:19.
Women's soccer
Colby 2, Maine Maritime 0: Jess Bushee scored two goals to lead the Mules past Maine Maritime Academy in the season opener.
Senior captain Whitney Lynn assisted on the goals for the Mules (1-0).
Colby captain Rachel Freierman stopped just one shot to earn the shutout.
Field hockey
Southern Maine 2, Colby 1: Whitney MacDaniel scored with 1 minute, 18 seconds left in overtime to lift the Huskies in a non-conference game on Bill Alfond Field.
Chelsea Rosenheimer scored the lone goal for the Mules (0-1).
Goalie Liz Fontaine stopped seven shots for Colby.
Fitchburg State 3, Thomas 1: Megan Jacobs scored to break a 1-1 tie and push Fitchburg State ahead in Waterville.
Heather Di Terlizzi and Paula Bartalamia also scored for Fitchburg.
Brittany Moore scored for Thomas (0-1).
Megan Denby had five saves for Thomas.
Gordon 2, UMaine-Farmington 1: Veronica Pierce's overtime score gave the Fighting Scots the non-conference win in Wenham, Mass.
Alyssa St. Pierre's goal for UMF late in the game sent it into overtime.
Chyanne Wilson made eight saves for Gordon 93-1) while Kaeleigh Barker made 18 for UMF (0-1).
Men's cross country
Bates 35, Colby 19: John Hall tied for the second-best time of the day, but it wasn't enough for the Colby men's cross country team in the Class Wave Relay Carnival at Pineland Farms in Gray.
Hall finished the 2.83-mile course in 14 minutes, 49 seconds.
Volleyball
UMaine-Farmington 3, Husson 2: The Beavers earned thier first win of the seaosn with a win over Husson but also fell to Maine Maritime Academy, 3-1, at the Colby Invitational.
UMF's Danielle O'Brien finished with 24 kills, four blocks and four service aces in the two matches and was named to the all-tournament team.
Colby Invitational: The Colby College volleyball team went 3-1 this weekend at the Colby Invitational in Wadsworth Gymnasium.
The Mules defeated Swarthmore College and lost to Plymouth State.
Jenny Lawrence had 35 assists, 17 digs and three service aces to earn all-tournament honors for the Mules.
Plymouth State went 3-0 to win the tournament.
