BIDDEFORD — The streak, as small as it was, is done.
After watching the East take over the Lobster Bowl the last two seasons, the West returned to its winning ways in the series pulling out a 24-6 win in front of about 4,000 spectators at Waterhouse Field on Friday night.
“It was tough,” said former Lawrence quarterback Jack Hersom, who split the duties with Waterville’s Daniel Hussey. “Our defense stepped up but we had over 100 plays on offense and it was tough to get them all in, but it was a fun game.”
The West led 7-6 at the half but then took over in the second half. Jonatan Hussey, formerly of Marshwood High, scored on a 15-yard run with 4 minutes, 8 seconds left in the third to break open a close game and put the West in control.
Hussey finished with 61 yards on seven carries.
His key touchdown came just three plays after the East lost the ball on a controversial catch and fumble. The East struggled to find consistency all night and fell deeper in the hole when Nicholas Bourassa, formerly of Jay, scored from 7 yards out to make it a 21-6 game just three minutes into the fourth quarter.
Hussey later kicked a 29-yard field goal to capped the scoring.
The East won the toss and took the ball to open the game. Kyle Vanidestine of Bangor brought the crowd to its feet when he took the opening kickoff 35 yards to give the East excellent field position at its own 35. Hersom started under center, but the drive only went 2 yards, thanks to sacks from Mark Haley of Marshwood and Samuel Lewis of Old Orchard Beach.
The West riled the East sideline at the start as it deviated from the three-man front it said it would play at the start of the game. However, its ends crept up to the line of scrimmage, creating havoc and confusion on the East sideline.
Haley and Lewis benefited from the scheme. On consecutive plays they sprung into the backfield and gobbled up Hersom, who had brought the East to the West 37.
With the drive over, the West wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. On its second play from scrimmage, former Massabesic quarterback Jeffrey Elliott found Richard Hoyte open in the flat. Hoyte burned defensive back Jacob Arthers on the play, hauled in the pass and had 50-yards of day light to score the games first touchdown.
With the East struggling to move the ball, it was clear from the get go it would need a break to get back into the game. That break came with a little more than four minutes remaining in the second quarter, when the West lost the ball on a botched handoff on its own 10.
Three plays later, Hussey scored on a quarterback keeper. He rolled out to his right, stopped, then reversed direction when he encountered  wall of West defenders. He scored untouched and although the two-point conversion failed, the East was back in the game.
