For those counting, that's five games against teams from the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I) in five seasons.
Well, thanks to an agreement with Atlantic Coast Conference member Florida State, the Black Bears will make that six for six.
The Seminoles became the latest FBS school to dot Maine's schedule, agreeing to host the Black Bears on Sept. 5, 2009, in Doak Campbell Stadium, which holds 82,300. Florida State becomes Maine's 91st different opponent in program history.
The Black Bears are 1-5 all-time against FBS schools -- they beat Mississippi State 9-7 in 2004. The game will mark the second time Maine will have played a school from the ACC. The Black Bears played Boston College in 2006.
Maine, which plays in the Colonial Athletic Association, finished 4-7 last season. Florida State is 4-2 lifetime against CAA teams, with their last meeting coming in 1960 in a 22-0 victory against William & Mary.
Florida State last won the national championship in 1999-2000, beating Virginia Tech 46-29 in the Sugar Bowl to earn the crown.
However, what once was an annual national title contender is now one of a handful of teams competing for the ACC championship. The Seminoles went 7-6 last year in a season that included big wins against BC and Colorado but tough losses to Wake Forest and Kentucky.
Bobby Bowden, who will turn 78 in November, took over the Florida State football program in 1976 and has been there since. He owns a career coaching record of 366-113-4.
