The fourth-seeded Mules (15-8-3) will meet Amherst in the NESCAC title game at 1 p.m. today at Middlebury.
Becky Julian’s shot was saved, but Osgood pounced on the rebound and knocked in the game-winning goal on the power play to send Colby to the league finals for the first time in the program’s history. Colby had a two-player advantage at the time after the Panthers picked up penalties at 12:08 and 12:36.
Brown was the key to the game for Colby. She stopped 30 shots in the opening two periods and had a 12-1 save advantage against Middlebury goalie Lexi Bloom in the third period. Bloom made 14 saves for the Panthers.
Colby’s Laura Anning set a NESCAC record with the fastest opening goal when she tallied just 15 seconds into the first period. Amanda Comeau’s shot was saved and Anning was there to poke in the rebound for the quick lead.
Skiing
Lebrun-Fortin earns All-American honors: Colby College’s Vincent Lebrun-Fortin earned his second All-American honor by making the first team in finishing fifth in the men’s slalom at the NCAA Skiing Championships at Bridger Bowl in Bozeman, Mont.
Lebrun-Fortin, a first-year skier, had earned second team honors for placing seventh in the giant slalom on Thursday. The top five finishers in the event earn first team honors and the next five make the second team.
ebrun-Fortin helped the Mules, despite not having a full team of at least three skiers, finish fifth in the slalom with 61 points. The Mules had two of the top 14 skiers in the country after Josh Kernan placed 14th with runs of 53.49 and 52.77 for a 1:46.26.
Men’s lacrosse
Colby 9, Williams 8: Drew Piekarski scored in the second overtime period to lift the Colby to a season-opening victory at Bill Alfond Field.
The Mules led 1-0 after the first period and had a 4-1 lead before Williams battled back to tie the game at four at halftime.
Caddy Brooks finished with three goals and one assist for Colby (1-0, 1-0 NESCAC). Piekarski also had three goals, while Whit McCarthy added one goal and two assists. Alex Farmer stopped 15 shots for the Mules.
Women’s lacrosse
Trinity 18, Colby 15: Freshman midfielder Rachel Romanowsky notched five goals and three assist in her collegiate debut and senior captain attacker C.J. Yanofsky scored five times with one assist to lead Trinity College in the season opener for both teams in Hartford, Conn.
Yanofsky scored twice in a 10-second span with just under four minutes left in the first half, after Colby junior attacker Lauren Strazzula had scored the last of four straight Mule goals to cut an 8-3 Trinity lead to 8-7 at the 6:09 mark.
Trinity goalie Michelle Smith totaled 15 saves and Colby backstop Keryn Meierdiercks stopped eight shots.
Softball
Penn State 5, UMaine 1: Black Bears lost to Big Ten-foe Penn State at the EC Moore Complex in the 2008 USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla.
Maine is 0-16.
