Kents Hill spring sports previews
Boys tennis
Coach: Pat McInerney (8th season)
Last season: 11-0, MAISAD champions
Top returners: None
Key newcomers: Reed Mulbury (Jr.), Dylan Rich (Fr.), Mathieu Provencher (Jr.), Zieao Zhou (Jr.), Brandon Keating (So.), Adam Rasgon (Sr.), Kento Sammori (Jr.)
Outlook: Coach Pat McInerney lost all nine players from last season’s undefeated league championship team, either through graduation or attrition. BUt the season is still lokking decent for the Huskies, Their top singles players, Mulbury and Rich, had a lot of experience before arriving at Kents Hill and McInerney had a raft of players from which to choose since 52 tried out for the team.
Coach’s comment: “Having a couple of kids up top who can play (helps). We’ll get better over the season.”
Baseball
Coach: Jim Smucker (9th season)
Last season: 9-4, won MAISAD title
Top returners: Ryan Dorso (Jr., C, SS), Tom Ferri (P, OF), Roger Perez (So., OF).
Key newcomers: Tim Sullivan (So., 2B), Kyle Irving (PG, P-UT)
Outlook: After years of practicing on a bumpy field and having to play on the road, the Huskies move onto a brand new turf field. Smucker hopes they’ll take advantage of the turf with team speed and a small-ball philosophy. Dorso is the team’s leading returning hitter while Ferri went 3-1 on the mound this year. Developing depth will be a key if the Huskies are to repeat as league champions.
Coach’s comment: “This year, a lot will depend on our pitching and our ability to get ahead on the count.”
Girls tennis
Coach: Jeff DeHaven (10th season)
Last season: 4-4
Top returners: Lara Cole (Sr.), Elise McInerney (Sr.), Morgan McKinney (Sr.)
Key newcomers: Kathrin Hazbargen (Jr.), Amanda Burns (Sr.)
Outlook: With the return of McInerney and Cole, the Huskies should be improved this season. McInerney, who played second singles last year, moves into the top spot while Cole moves from No. 3 to No. 2. Hazbargen will play third singles. DeHaven is still looking for reliable doubles combinations.
Coach’s comment: “I think we’re going to be a little bit better. I guess our major concern is the doubles groups because they are fairly new.”
Boys lacrosse
Coach: Todd Wheelden (5th season)
Last season: 7-5, 2nd in MAISAD, NEPSAC semifinals
Top returners: A Nick Delp (Jr.), M Charlie Stephens (Jr.), D Nick Kolb (Sr.), GK Jake Cockrell (Jr.).
Key newcomers: M Steven Skolsky (PG), D Jack Croasdale (PG), GK Jason Foley (PG).
Outlook: The Huskies will be competitive this season. The offense should provide a fairly balanced attack thanks to an influx of upper classmen. Goaltending will be the backbone for a relatively young defense.
Coach’s comment: “The key to this year’s success will be getting players to play within one system. There is a lot of individual talent out there.”
girls lacrosse
Coach: Sarah Hunt (3rd year)
Last season: 8-6, lost to Hebron in MAISAD finals
Top returners: A Alyssa Corvi (Jr.), M Laurel Lyeden (Jr.), D Natalie Torterella (Jr.), GK Sam Kiesel (Sr.).
Key newcomers: D Bianca Bogda (PG), M Amy Hilton (Jr.).
Outlook: Kents Hill reached the MAISAD championship game last spring, returning an outstanding group of athletes from that game. Goalkeeper Sam Kiesel sets the tone for the Huskies with her play in the back. Kents Hill will be a serious contender for league honors this season.
Coach’s comment: “This is the best group of girls I have ever coached. They are strong, dedicated and talented. I am really looking forward to seeing what these girls can do. I expect this to be the strongest season in the teams history.”
