Kents Hill fall sports previews
GOLF
Coach: Stephen Stortz (2nd season)
Home course: Belgrade Lakes
Top returners: Rees Evans (Sr.), Josh Tishman (Jr.).
Key newcomers: Unavailable at press time.
Outlook: Kents Hill is coming off a winless season, but Stortz expects improvement this year. Evans and Tishman usually golfed third, fourth or fifth for the Huskies last season, and should move up this season.
Coach's comment: "I understand that interest has increased to the point where I will have to make cuts this year."
FIELD HOCKEY
Coach: Randy Richardson (9th season)
Last season: 1-12, made MAISAD final
Top returners: B Devin Leary (Sr.), F Cassie Murphy (Sr.), B Morgan McKenney (Sr.), F Casey-Rae Feeney (Jr.), M Meg Richardson (Jr.).
Key newcomers: M/F Jasmine Elwell (Jr.), F Leah Bley (So.), M/B Harriet Crouch (So.), G Amy Hilton (So.), UT Marlene Krusemark (So.).
Outlook: The graduation of goalie Liz Anderson, who is now playing at the University of Maine, will be a blow, but Leary is a capable leader on defense. The Huskies have a number of local players like Bley (Readfield), Feeney (Fayette) and Richardson (Kents Hill). Everything will be faster this fall, as the Huskies move out of the mud and onto a new turf field.
Coach's comment: "The big thing up here is adapting our play to field turf. We are really looking forward to it."
BOYS SOCCER
Coach: Pat McInerney (16th season)
Last season: 14-5-2, won MAISAD championship
Top returners: D Nick Kold (Sr.), MF Josh Melnick (Sr.), D Jon-Michael Roy (Jr.), F John Fessenden (So.).
Key newcomers: Not available.
Outlook: McInerney has yet to see many of this year's players but knows there are several coming, including some from foreign countries. The returnees all played a part in leading the Huskies to the conference championship last season and into the New England prep school playoffs.
Coach's comment: "I wouldn't call it a building year because we have a bunch of good kids coming back."
GIRLS SOCCER
Coach: Steve Bell
Last season: 8-6-2, won MAISAD title
Top returners: D Laurel Lydon (Jr.), G Maryke Moreau (Sr.), MF Amanda Burns (Sr.), D Elise McInerney (Sr.), MF Shakie Dumont (Jr.), F Rachel Mitchell (So.), D Thaney Cockrell (So.).
Key newcomers: Not available.
Outlook: The Huskies won the MAISAD championship last year and figure to compete for the titlte again this season. The three returning players are accomplished and will be joined by a complement of players this fall from around Maine, New England and beyond.
Coach's comment: "We should be very good in the midfield and on defense and that should keep us in all of our games."
FOOTBALL
Head coach: Jim Smucker (7th year)
Coaches: Matt Moore (defensive coordinator), Tom Kozub (defensive backs), Brian Smith (offense/defense lines)
Last season: 3-5
Offensive leaders: WR Ryan Dorso (Jr.), QB Ganson Pollock (Sr.), C Pat Englehardt (Sr.), OL Sam Stanley (Sr.), RB Charlie Stevens (Jr.), RB Mark Iritano (PG), WR/TE Tom Houle (PG), OL Stephen Shipman (PG)
Defensive leaders: DB Dorso, DB Pollock, DL Stanley, DL Englehardt, DB/OLB Stevens, LB Iritano, LB/DE Houle, DL Shipman.
Outlook: The Huskies this year are implementing a new spread offense. Smucker says he wants to utilize his team's athleticism, led by newcomer Iritano, Dorso and Polluck. Dorso played a little quarterback last year, but Smucker says he's back at his natural position. The Huskies, who play in the Evergreen League's North Division, are moving from grass to turf this fall.
Coach's comment: "We're changing up out offense because we have some skilled guys. To compete in our league, we have to maximize our skills. Every game we lost last year we lost in the fourth quarter. We need to execute."
