Mary S. Birch 1933-2004

She was born in Augusta on May 26, 1933, the daughter of James P. and May (Gillespie) Strickland. Mary was educated in Augusta schools, graduating from Cony High School in 1951 and the University of Maine at Orono in 1955. In June 1957, she married Herbert W. "Sam" Birch and moved to Coopers Mills in 1958. She taught the fourth and fifth grades for 25 years in Wallingford, Conn.; in Whitefield; and at Williams and Hodgkins schools in Augusta. After retirement, Mary enjoyed her grandchildren, needlework, cooking, celebrating the changing of the seasons and decorating her home for the holidays. She was predeceased by a son, David H. Birch, in 1984. Survivors include her husband, Sam, of Coopers Mills; a daughter, Nancy Birch of Augusta; sons Peter Birch and his wife, Carol, of Windsor, and Andrew Birch of Augusta; grandsons Jason Libby of Canton, N.Y., Samuel Birch of Windsor and Matthew Birch of Windsor; granddaughter Melissa Birch of Windsor; brothers James and his wife, Margaret, of Orlando, Fla., and Robert and his wife, Margaret, of Winthrop; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and the extended Gabriele family. At her request, there will be no visiting hours or service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mary Sunshine Fund, dedicated to improving the lives of chemotherapy patients, their families and caregivers, P.O. Box 1, Coopers Mills 04330; or to any charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by Cremation Services of Maine, Belfast. |
