HALLOWELL — A man fishing from the dock at the Hallowell boat landing this morning used his fishing rod to pull another man from the Kennebec River, police said.
Bob Greene, 42, said he was drinking a cup of coffee and waiting for the sun to rise around 4:30 a.m. when he heard what he thought was a bird making noise in the distance. A few minutes later, he realized it was a faint cry for help from a man bobbing down the river.
He called 911 and then used his striper lure to snag the man’s shirt and pulled him to shore.
“He had a pretty good hook on him and was slowly reeling him in when the officer arrived,” said Hallowell Police Chief Eric Nason.
The man, who is described as being in his mid-30s, is believed to have jumped from the Cushnoc Crossing bridge in Augusta, also known as the third bridge, Nason said.
He was pulled from the water alive and taken to a hospital for treatment, he said.
