FAYETTE -- It's back to school today for students at Fayette Central School.
They had an unscheduled day off Monday because of a leaky oil pump switch.
Superintendent Briane Coulthard, who is also the principal, said a pinhole leak developed in the pump system, which forces oil from the tanks in the basement to the first-floor furnace.
Three to four gallons of oil sprayed into the air and collected on the cement floor.
Coulthard said the heavy odor was carried through the ventilation system and proved to be overpowering.
He said a replacement pump switch and regulator is en route from New York, and that the custodian will come in early today and manually operate the pump system to warm up the school.
"We're so lucky we're not into real cool weather," Coulthard said.
"The janitor can turn the switch on and off to pump it."
The school has 74 children enrolled.
