AUGUSTA -- Old Fort Western will celebrate an old time Independence Day from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., Saturday. In keeping with the traditions of the day, the observance will begin with the reading of the Declaration of Independence, followed by the striking of the British colors and replacing them with the then-new American flag. Rounds of cannon fire will resound across the Kennebec River, followed by patriotic oratory, the giving of toasts and the singing of patriotic songs of the period.
Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for children age 6 to 16. Kids younger than 6 and all Augusta residents are admitted free.
AUGUSTA -- An anti-tax, pro-conservative rally is planned Saturday at Capitol Park. The Independence Day Tea Party is from 2 to 7 p.m. and will include speeches, information tables and patriotic music.
Small copies of the U.S. Constitution will be available, and other activities will include children's games; free train rides on a miniature, trackless barrel train; and a cookout with food available for purchase.
WINTHROP -- The annual fireworks display will take place at dusk on Saturday over Norcross Point on Maranacook Lake.
The event sponsor, Winthrop Area Chamber of Commerce, says the event is underwritten almost exclusively by local businesses, community organizations and individuals.
WINTHROP -- A celebration will take place Saturday at More To Life Family Campground on Lower Narrows Pond.
There will be a parade at the campground at 10 a.m. Family games and beach activities will take place all day. Dinner will begin at 4 p.m. and includes lobster, $15; chicken, $10; hot dogs, $4; or steamed clams at market price. For reservations, call 395-4908.
WINTHROP -- More than 500 runners are expected for the seventh annual "Friends on the 4th" 5K road race Saturday at 8 a.m.
The race is open to all runners, joggers and walkers and travels along Main Street and the eastern shore of Maranacook Lake.
Registration on race day is $23 and starts at 7 a.m. at the American Legion on Bowdoin Street.
Proceeds from the race support programs and projects offered by Friends of the Cobbossee Watershed.
WHITEFIELD -- The parade at Kings Mills and "fun day" with bicentennial themes starts at 10 a.m. Saturday.
