60 days in jail for bad checks

AUGUSTA -- A Winslow mother will spend 60 days behind bars for writing bad checks.

Danielle M. Greene, 42, was sentenced Tuesday in Kennebec County Superior Court to three years in prison, with all but 60 days suspended, and two years' probation.

"This is simply dishonest conduct on your part," Justice Nancy Mills told Greene at sentencing. "Two things ring loud and clear: You have not accepted responsibility, and there is no remorse for the victims."

Greene pleaded guilty Dec. 10, 2008, to three counts of negotiating a worthless instrument. The checks, in amounts from $14 to $216, were written to Winslow High School for 18 tickets to a fundraising event, to Winslow Junior High School for a cookie dough fundraiser and to an individual to pay for her daughter to play on an indoor soccer team.

Greene's attorney told the judge all restitution was paid.

Greene previously had pleaded guilty in 2005 in court in Somerset County to running a program in which she failed to provide April school vacations to Aruba to families who had paid her $20,000. She was fined $3,000 in that case.
