The driver, who was identified Friday as 36-year-old Randy Sebring, died when his truck veered off the southbound lane of the turnpike near mile marker 84 close to the Lewiston-Sabattus town line, said Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland.
The flatbed truck struck the center guardrail and came to rest, on its wheels, in the median.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Traffic backed up several miles as travel was reduced to one lane for nearly three hours until the scene was cleared around 5:30 p.m.
Investigators have not given a cause for the crash.
Sebring's body was taken to the Maine Medical Examiner's office. A spokesman there said Friday the cause of death was still unknown pending further studies.
The truck was owned by Boston Ladder and Scaffolding. A message left at the Auburn location, where Sebring is an employee, was not returned Friday.
Sebring was returning to the company after making a delivery to the new Mount View school complex in Thorndike.
