AUGUSTA -- A Waterville woman who now admits embezzling about $900,000 from her family's company over a five-year period is to be sentenced Aug. 26 in Kennebec County Superior Court.

Paula Caron, 51, was indicted by a grand jury in January on one count of theft by unauthorized taking.

She initially pleaded not guilty. However, on May 7, she returned to court and changed her plea to guilty.

Court documents show she remains free on $2,000 cash bail pending sentencing.

District Attorney Evert Fowle said the state will seek a sentence of 10 years in jail, with all but five years suspended and three years' probation.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, Caron's attorney, Arnold Clark, can argue for less jail time.

Clark was in court and unavailable to comment Wednesday.

Fowle said he will seek full restitution of $900,000. "We always want people to be ordered to pay back what they stole," he said.

The indictment says the embezzlement occurred in Vassalboro between Jan. 1, 2003, and Dec. 31, 2007, and says the money belonged to Winslow Aluminum Inc., a company founded in 1974.

Caron, who was a bookkeeper at the company, is the daughter of Winslow Aluminum President Don Maheu and the niece of Robert Maheu, vice president of the company.

The firm manufactures vinyl replacement windows and distributes siding and home improvement products.

Bail conditions ban her from contact with Robert Maheu and Richard Heffernan, general manager of Winslow Aluminum. She also is barred from the premises of Winslow Aluminum and the judge ordered her not to leave the state.
