Selectmen voted to sign a contract with the new dispatch center after considering moving the call-answering functions of the Public Safety Answering Point to the Skowhegan-based Somerset County Communications Center.
Although the Somerset facility has a lower per-capita cost, selectmen said the savings for Vienna would be minimal and added that they were worried using three different facilities would be "too fragmented."
The Kennebec County regional center will provide PSAP services at a cost of $2.50 per head and will dispatch Maine State Police or the Kennebec County Sheriff's Department at a cost of $4 per head. Both fees are due annually. Calls for fire or rescue will be forwarded to Winthrop, to be dispatched as they have been in the past.
Board of Selectmen Chairwoman Dodi Thompson said she will contact the director of the Central Maine Regional Communications Center to discuss the contract, and funding for it will appear on the March town meeting warrant.
Thompson said she would inquire about the amount due for services provided prior to the contract date. Townspeople will be asked to approve funding for that bill at town meeting, as well.
In other business, selectmen met with the Comprehensive Plan Committee regarding their newly updated plan.
A public forum on the plan -- required under the state-legislated Growth Management Act for towns wishing to implement zoning, growth-cap or impact fee ordinances -- will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday in the community room. This will be the last opportunity for citizen input before the plan is finalized.
A public hearing on the final plan will be held on March 5, at the same time and location. The town will vote on adopted the new plan at the annual town meeting, set for March 8.
