Christopher I. Dumaine, 39, of Readfield had been under surveillance by police. He was taken into custody by Maine State Police detectives and brought to the Kennebec County jail in Augusta at 4:15 a.m., according to jail records.
Court documents filed by Kennebec County Deputy District Attorney Alan Kelley say police saw Dumaine and the same 16-year-old girl named as the victim in the sex assault case together on a private road leading to her house later Tuesday morning.
"Detective Adam Kelley recognized the victim as she exited the defendant's vehicle and told her to go to her residence as he took the defendant into custody," according to the state's motion to revoke Dumaine's bail.
The girl told officers "she did not want to say anything that would get the defendant in trouble," according to court documents.
The district attorney's petition to revoke bail says police watched Dumaine leave his house late Monday night or early Tuesday and return in the time it would have taken to drive from his Readfield residence to the victim's home, then return to his house. Police saw the two leave Dumaine's house early Tuesday morning and drive back to the girl's home, according to Kelley's memo.
Dumaine had been charged Oct. 11 with two counts of gross sexual assault and two counts of unlawful sexual contact. The alleged incidents took place between June 1 and Sept. 14, during a period in which he was the girl's teacher.
All the charges name the same girl as the victim.
Dumaine pleaded not guilty Oct. 11 and was freed on $500 bail with conditions that ban him from contact with the girl, her family, and students and faculty at Monmouth Academy, as well as unsupervised contact with any girl younger than 18.
That same day, his wife, Selene A. Dumaine of Readfield, filed for a divorce in Augusta District Court, citing grounds of adultery and irreconcilable differences. The couple married on Aug. 10, 1996, in Kennebunkport. They have two children. The court file does not include a response from Christopher Dumaine.
Dumaine taught at Monmouth Academy, his alma mater, for 16 years before resigning abruptly Sept. 17.
He is scheduled to appear on the criminal case in Augusta District Court via video link today at 1 p.m.
"We're trying to make sure that he's held without bail," said District Attorney Evert Fowle. "There's no excuse that I can think of that would justify his complete disregard of the court order."
"We are gathering information concerning the allegation now and will address this more fully at tomorrow's court appearance," said Dumaine's attorney, Walter McKee. "I expect to request that the court re-release him on bail tomorrow."

Gosh, Monmouth must be behind the times. In Portland, they understand that even 11 year-olds are gonna have sex if they want it, and the school's real responsibility is to provide birth control, not condemnation.
Yes, I understand that this predator violated his position as a teacher when he committed Statutory Rape, but I cannot help but draw parallels.
The phrase used to be "15 will get you 20". Now, when having sex with a teenager is no longer such a taboo and sentences are months instead of years, who really cares?
That 16 year old was going to have sex anyway, they'll say. At least a more mature sexual partner will probably be more aware of preventing pregnancy and STDs, right? Isn't that what we're really worried about? It can't be the MORALITY!report abuse
There's one huge difference here- William Flynn killed a man.
To Mystery Curious- your pubic hair comment has NAMBLA written all over it. How disgusting. People like you make me wonder how many pedophiles there truly are in Maine (but haven't gotten caught yet).

But the problem here as in many similiar cases is us not the lovers.

As for the pastor, she's not an "alleged victim" when HE was caught with her by the police. He may not have had a trial yet, but his actions speak volumes.
Once found legally guilty, he needs to be placed away from all young people and NEVER EVER be able to hold any job that involves anyone under the age of 18. Perhaps Jonathan has an extra room he can rent out...:)report abuse
The results would be the same if the genders were reversed. Haven't you seen all of the recent news regarding all of the female teachers diddling their male students? It's becoming more common, and has simply made it to our state this time.
I think it's about time that Chris Hanson & his Dateline NBC crew paid a visit to Maine to get together with state, county, & local police departments for their, "To Catch A Predator" sting/broadcast on MSNBC. It would be like shooting fish in a barrel. report abuse
