Live window models returning to Water St.

AUGUSTA -- Live female models are returning to Water Street, and they will be wearing -- well, something.

On Saturday, a former comic book store known as Wallcrawler is reopening as ArchEnemys, a shop specializing in latex dresses, stiletto heels and racy lingerie. Young women, calling themselves Archangels, will model fashions in the windows of the renovated storefront at 182 Water St.

It's just a year since the closing of Spellbound across the street, a lingerie business that also used scantily-dressed models and attracted a flurry of media and other attention, including criticism that the display was too risqué.

ArchEnemys -- a pun on the arch in your foot -- doesn't use the word sexy in its advertising. But the wall posters of women in various poses and the fancy red, pink and black undergarments suggest that the merchandise is about looking sexually provocative.

"Augusta may not be ready, but we're ready," said Carrie LaChance, 21, co-owner of the business with husband Nate, and herself one of the Archangels. A poster of her wearing a black bikini and sprawled across the front of a yellow sports car hangs on the wall.

Nate LaChance, 37, is the photographer. He met his future wife when she agreed to model for him. "It's going to be quite a wild ride," he said, referring to their business venture.

Carrie LaChance, a Dover-Foxcroft native, said she attended cosmetology school and worked in a salon for nine months. "The life that I am living now is so much more exciting," she said. "Modeling is my true passion."

She uses her hairdressing skills to help other models.

"All of our models are highly trained," she said. "They're very professional, very classy." She said ArchEnemys isn't about pornography. "We're close to the edge, but we haven't crossed it. Once you do, you can never go back."

Her sister Archangels are Danielle McQuillan of Winthrop, Shayna Fergerson of Waterville and Brittany Prescott of Ellsworth. Models will not be nude, LaChance said.

"It's all about the clothes and the footwear," said LaChance, who was wearing a clingy black latex dress and very high heels. "It's not just about stuff to wear in the bedroom."

Peter Thompson, president and chief executive officer of the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce, said Thursday he hadn't heard about the return of live models to Water Street.

"I hope it's a business that presents itself in a manner that is going to be acceptable to people," he said, adding that if it attracts more people to shop downtown, that would be good news.

Carrie LaChance acknowledged that "people aren't really used to this sort of thing."

Nate LaChance, who grew up in Winslow, said the business is a dream for him after working as a landscaper, drywaller, disc jockey and bouncer.

Do family members like what he's doing? Mostly, he said. But his late father, ex-Marine and Vietnam veteran James LaChance, was skeptical for awhile. Eventually, Nate LaChance said, he showed his father the Web site, and the senior LaChance accepted what his son did for work.

A check on ArchEnemys Web site, where merchandise is for sale, shows several Playboy magazine-style poses, but no nudity.

There is a fashion show featuring latex dresses, which appear hot in both senses, starting at 8 p.m. Live photo shoots of models will take place in the on-site studio and the public is invited to watch and to meet the models, Carrie LaChance said.

We just wanted to thank all of you for your support in our stores Grand opening & our High Heel, Latex Fashion show this past Saturday. Your support is much appreciated & it really made all our hard work so much more worth it. You are definitely correct... we have put a lot of thought & planning into the design of our store & we have done our homework. We're here to stay and we will do the best we can to represent in the classy & professional manner that you have come to expect from us.

For those of you who do not support ArchEnemys please, please, please… bring it our attention because we feel your voice should be heard and responded too as well. However, if you feel compelled to make your case..., make it strong and keep it to the point. There are enough people who react negatively out of fear of something they don't understand. We, can handle them... we have the tools needed to educated them. But if you really want your comments to be taken seriously then you must express them in a positive and constructive way. That goes especially for you “Mike”. I know your lurking somewhere close by…

Looking forward to patronizing the new establishment. I hope you present yourself with class. Not just Augusta, but any business of your type in central Maine could flourish from doing so. You have a great oppotunity; I hope you also have a great business plan. In Maine, you will need it it. report abuse

Possum of Manchester and the like,
So what exactly is it that you are complaining about? The size of the models to be in the windows at this shop? Thier self-esteem or self-views? The method in which they got to be in this physical and emotional state? Is it the use of well known props for the sale of clothing at this shop perhaps? Or maybe it is the successful sales of cars and clothing when paired with women from as long ago as the 1950's?

Look if you are going to try and set us back to the 1950's why not go back further? Like in the 1920's when women other than prostitues and actresses began wearing makeup? Durring the time of the Civil War women were not allowed to show any part of their legs on down to their feet, nor thier arms. The Renaissance era allowed the showing of a woman's clevage and arms but not her legs nor feet. Portraits of Queen Elizabeth show her with stiff collars that cover her entire throat and neck right up to her chin, as well as sleeves going directly to her wrists and the bottom of the gowns dragging on the floor allowing not even the slightest showing of a toe. Is this what you wish for our young women. Perhaps you should go to the East and live where the women are covered from head to toe as well. Large or Small these women are proud of the way that they look and have every right to show it. This does not make them narcissistic, nor does it mean that they have paid to have such wonderful forms. So just back off. No one is makign you shop at this store. You are more than welcome to use any of the other shops along the street. Perhaps your kind is what should not be welcome to Augusta!!! report abuse

Tina XX,
I am not sure where you get your information on the products that are being sold in this store but after looking on thier websire several of the outfits that I saw were nothing worse than are sold at WalMart in the clothing departments, both for the women and the girls. Sure they do not sell shoes of quite that height, is that what has your feathers all up in a dither? You know what I am happy for you that you yourself are willing to admit that you are too "disgusted by the notion" of what is in there to buy it yourself. However please do not put such opinions on the rest of us women. I will go in there and I am very likely to come out with an outfit or two if they are available in my petite size. As for the men, hell those who have wives or women that would wear such attire generally do know their woman's size so I do not see that being a problem. Now if your man doesn't know what size you are that is no reason to blame the rest of the men in the area. As for your comment about kids going in to get their "kicks" well they show up at WalMart all of the time to throw things over the risers, trash the clothing racks or the toy aisles and much more, so what is the difference if they are going to go in and just look around. Damn better in my opinion than making me dodge a flying item in a shopping store. Grandparents have lived through quite a bit and gotten used to looking over what they do not care for, perhaps you should take a lesson from them. And you know what if you love your daughter you would be happy with whatever she chooses to do in life so long as it makes her happy and will not cause her any harm. Being a model has never been publisized as a world's deadliest job that I am aware of, but I will be sure to look into that for future reference.
The only women that will lose their husbands in this are those who are already gone. The models are there to sell clothes not themselves. Men looking for that already know where to go.report abuse

Who needs a night club to where a latex dress and stilletto heels to Brian? You can wear that anywhere.

I say welcome to the scantily clad live models in the windows. If you prudes out there don't like then I guess you should stop watching cable and not looked at that store as you drive by.

Maybe we should send some of these people who have a problem with this over to Europe or at least Italy. My aunt live in Italy and I was there visiting for 6 weeks a while back. Woman go to the beach and the pools topless, with kids around, ads for perfume and cologne have a woman or a man with some strategically placed to cover their genitals, and I mean just their genitals, and tanning lotion ads had fully naked woman on them haning up in store window where everyone could see. There was even a commercial that came on daytime television with two people very obviously having sex. I don't remember what they were advertising but it certainly caught my attention.report abuse

Best of luck to the new store. I personally think that if someone does not like it they should not look. I pass by many stores downtown and could not tell you what they are or what they sell. However this store I will be in to check out the inventory. report abuse

I wish them the best of luck in this business venture. I know that quite a bit of time and energy has been put into the design and set up of the new shop. I am also sure that after the closing of the previous shop they put a great deal of thought into opening a shop of this nature in this location.

I am unsure if Augusta will provide a large enough customer base for this type of a shop and merchandise but only time will tell. Leather and Lace Lingerie has been around for as long as I can remember so perhaps they too will be able to make a go of it. report abuse
