Local agencies share funding for food and shelter

Numerous agencies in Kennebec and Somerset Counties have received federal funding for emergency food and shelter programs.

In Kennebec County, 16 organizations received a total of $64,550; in Somerset County, 13 groups shared $39,134.

The money is distributed by a unit of the Federal Emergency Management Agency -- part of an appropriation by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas, according to United Way of Mid-Maine, which is distributing the funds to local service agencies.

Agencies in Kennebec County expected to receive funds are: Augusta Food Bank, $3,207; Bread of Life Ministries, Augusta, $7,000; and Chrysalis Place/Gardiner Food Center, $1,700.

Also: Clinton Community Food Bank, $1,500; Evening Sandwich Program, Waterville, $2,138; Greater Waterville Area Food Bank, $2,000; Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter, Waterville, $3,207; Parish of the Holy Spirit Soup Kitchen, Waterville, $1,750; Rural Community Action Ministry, Leeds, $3,000; Sacred Heart Soup Kitchen, Waterville, $4,543; St. John's Parish, $2,000; Senior Spectrum Cohen Center, Hallowell, $2,357; Senior Spectrum Muskie Center, Waterville, $2,357; Salvation Army, Augusta, $13,500; Salvation Army, Waterville, $10,000; and Youth and Family Services, Inc., Augusta, $3,000.

Somerset County agencies to receive funds are: Bingham Area Food Pantry, $5,595; Canaan Food Cupboard, $1,679; Cornville Community Food Pantry, $1,343; Fairfield Interfaith Food Pantry, $1,679; Jackman Food Cupboard, $4,252; Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter, Waterville, $3,916; Salvation Army, Portland, $2,458; Senior Spectrum Muskie Center, Waterville, $3,164; Skowhegan Community Food Cupboard, $5,594; St. Anthony's Soup Kitchen, Skowhegan, $2,797; Starks Food Cupboard, $1,399; Tri-Town Food Cupboard, Hartland, $1,678; and Youth & Family Services, Inc., Skowhegan, $2,797.
