It's clearly a "McCain for President" endorsement from both women, their spokesmen confirmed.
Snowe, in a statement, said McCain, has a proven track record to address the nation's challenges.
The Arizona Republican is considered one of the front-runners for the 2008 GOP nomination
Jake Ward, spokesman for Snowe, acknowledged that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, another presidential hopeful, had recently spent a lot of time at Snowe's office.
Kevin Kelly, a Collins spokesman, said she was part of McCain's "kitchen cabinet" before McCain, an Arizona Republican, decided to consider a presidential bid.
Collins said McCain's experience on both domestic and foreign policy issues is "unparalleled."
"I can think of no better person to lead our nation than John McCain," Collins said.
State Rep. Joshua Tardy of Newport, the House Republican leader, will serve as vice chairman of the committee.
