FARMINGTON -- Charges are pending against a Medway man for allegedly breaking into two Central Maine Power substations in broad daylight last May to steal copper grounding wire from high-voltage equipment.

Jon A. Ladd, 24, is among eight men alleged to be part of a copper theft ring who were indicted this week by a Penobscot County grand jury. Ladd was indicted for theft by unauthorized taking, two counts of burglary, aggravated criminal mischief and receiving stolen property.

Between May and September, copper wire was stolen from businesses, hospitals and telephone and utility companies from Penobscot County to central Maine, including locations in Farmington, Strong, Waterville and Augusta.

The total value of copper stolen from Maine utilities alone last year is estimated at $50,000.
