It's realy sad to see such negativity. Maybe you haven't noticed, but our schools are failing. I'm talking about the smaller towns. They are under budgeted under staffed and struggling. There's to many students dropping out with no help with job training. Over paid school board members, and the list goes on. Consolidation atleast offers a change, more opportunities for students in a wider varity of programs.So instead of being apart of the problem try being part of the solution.report abuse

you don't want the mess of large consoladated school districts, like in this big city. stay small with control local, but pool for buying power.report abuse

I was opposed to the original "consolidation" in the '60's; I am opposed to this gimmick, too. Small schools work fine with qualified teachers - and most are. My father was a teacher, principal, superintendent. He did almost all of his own office work, with an occasional student trainee. He had 6 schools during his stint as superintendent, and was well liked and respected. With the cost of fuel going through the roof, we hardly need to bus children any further. Let's UN-consolidate some of the existing education conglomerates, and try that for a while.report abuse

I MOVED TO VASSALBORO 15 YEARS AGO WITH A PLAN THAT MY KIDS WOULD GO TO ERSKINE...NOW THAT THEY ARE MONTHS FROM ATTENDING THE SCHOOL WE HAVE STRIVED FOR, OUR BELOVED GOVERNOR HAS STEPPED IN AND MESSED UP OUR PLANS IN LIFE.......THANK YOU MR. Heres an idea... let's not start the much needed experiment of consolidation of municipal level service with our kids education! Our school systems are already inherently consolidated, very little room for improvements.

How about we start by consolidating transfer stations, town offices, and road crews. Hmmmm geeze that would probably make too much sense...

ever drive down a road in Maine that stops being plowed at the town line? How much sense does that make?

Leave the schools alone and consolidate the stuff that is really redundant and expensive!!

Funny how the budget ax always looms over schools first but these stodgy ol mainers will fight to the last man to protect the town dump or bloated redundant make no sense road maintenance contracts!!report abuse

What a waste of time and money! Maine has a county form of government, and education should be directed by the county. One Administrator per county, with capable principals at each school is what Maine needs. Most neighborhood schools would stay open (as long as student population does not drastically drop). The school council is made up up of 5 people nominated and elected from each school who meet with the Administrator on a monthly basis. Our Administrator is responsible for 152,000 students and our SAT scores beat Cony's SAT scores year after year. report abuse
