Having interviewed the late musician Warren Zevon several times throughout his long career, I was thrilled to receive "Insides Out," the recently released debut by his son, Jordan Zevon (on New West/Ammal Records).

I take great pleasure saying that Jordan is very much his father's son, not that his music sounds like anything Warren Zevon ever recorded. Jordan Zevon's vocal stylings are a lot smoother and he leans more toward pop music where his father had a more raw, rock edge.

Where he does take after his dad is in his smart, witty lyrics (he pens five by himself, co-penned three with Morty Coyle, his father wrote one and Coyle solo penned the last one called "Payday"). Here's a perfect example from the opening track, "The Joke's On Me" -- "I'm just a bland mime yanking on a fake line/I'll keep on pulling/But who am I fooling?/'Cause it looks like the jokes on me."

Another wonderful tune is "Camila Rhodes," which is as playful as some of his Warren Zevon's best, where "American Standard" and "Too Late To Be Saved" possess more of a melancholy nature. And "Home," which he wrote about his father, is a brutally honest appraisal and admission of loss.

Jordan also covers his father's "Studebaker" brilliantly, making it his own and plays guitar on some tracks and piano on others. All told, I'm very pleased with this release -- I think the Zevon name is well represented here, and Warren Zevon would be proud.
