"THE VISITOR"
108 minutes. (PG)
Walter Vale (Richard Jenkins) is a widower, a college professor who discovers a young couple Zainab and Tarek living in his little-used New York City apartment. They have been scammed into living there, thinking it was a sublet. It gets worse. They are illegal. Unable to toss them into the street, Walter allows them to stay until they can find a home and Tarek, a master of the African drum, begins to teach Walter the instrument. Eventually, as the two new friends grow closer and bond in the urban jungle, a mistake on the subway brings Tarek to the attention of undercover cops. "The Visitor," written and directed by Thomas McCarthy, is a small, well-cut diamond not to be missed.
