'Postcards' proves music is in the genes
Kennebec Journal & Morning Sentinel 05/09/2008

When I got the package from Rock Ridge Music that had last week's Dare U.S. debut double-CD collection, today's CD was also included. You see 54 Seconds' "Postcards from California" came out last August. I found out the frontman for this Southern England-born, Austin, Texas-based quartet is none other than Spencer Gibb, son of Bee Gees' Robin Gibb, a member of one of my favorite bands.

I just had to give a listen to what he'd created. Gibb's voice is fragile, hauntingly familiar, but still very much his own and the lead vocalist, guitarist and pianist is joined by three very talented friends Rachel Loy (bass and vocals), Stewart Cochran (piano, keyboards, synthesizers and vocals) and Jeff Botta (drums, percussion and vocals).

Stylistically, all the disparate influences the quartet has grown up with find their way into the final mix so you can hear everything from jazz and funk to pop and prog rock working their way into the 11 band-written tracks (co-produced by Gibb and recorder/mixer Luis Guerrero). Musically, there are ballads and some really rocking moments highlighted by "Dirty Little Secret," "How I Roll (Summer Version)," the Pink Floyd-esque "Breathing" and the epic 5:55-minute closer "Still Behind Me" (where you really hear his Dad's influence in Spencer's vocal delivery).

This CD (the group's fourth full-length album) is nostalgic and yet very cutting edge and new -- a really neat listen for me. Robin Gibb should be very proud.
