This quintet has created an eight-song set on this 2007 CD titled "Seas of Blood" that bears up well under repeated listenings (in fact, to really appreciate the complexities of their music and lyrics, I strongly recommend several listening sessions).
The eight songs clock in at 50-plus minutes in length and there is a myriad of musical styles present, as well, with intricately arranged metal passages on one track then simple straight piano accompaniment on another.
From the opening epic, "Serpentarius," to the shortest track, "Little Lady Lillit," By Blood Alone gives listeners a chance to enter into bizarre worlds accompanied by driving guitar-bass-drums and an eerie pipe organ-like effect from Williamson.
Visually, I've got to say that their cover illustration is very cool and reflects the medieval nature of their music.
Needless to say, a trip to Geno's (625 Congress St. in Portland, 221-2382, for more information) Saturday night for the band's show supporting this CD would be in order if you happen to be, like me, a fan of progressive rock (with gothic and metal overtones).
I would also suggest a visit to the band's Web sites www.bybloodalone.com or www.myspace.com/bybloodalone.
