For just one of the company's profiting from the Canadian "system", see Timely Medical Alternatives. Next time you're in London, take time to wander thru one of their pharmacies. They have some wonderful items to tide you over while you wait to see a doctor.report abuse

DTOM: According to Wikipedia the average life expectancy in the UK (and the EU as a whole) is more than a year longer than in the US. The UK has a national health system, as does I believe much of the EU except Germany. The US is increasingly unable to compete economically since we have the most expensive health care system in the world, something the nation can no longer afford.

That's why I see a national health system as the only viable option, and most of us would also want health insurance as well. However instead of debating the real issues, the Democrats are trying to ram their "public option" through the Congress to meet a deadline imposed by Obama. These protesters fear Anthem is trying to slow down the Democrats, which would be an excellent idea in my view. Link on life expectancy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/report abuse

Why is a little 'reality check' considered bloom and doom ? It SHOULD be a wake-up call.report abuse

Note: For example in Mass., where they have a "public option" for those with low enough incomes, most everyone there legally has some health coverage, they still face exorbitantly expensive health care that's increasing more rapidly in price than resident's incomes are. The federal government faces the identical problem, with the cost of Medicare and Medicaid increasing faster than national incomes are.

That's one reason the federal government is going into ever more debt, and it's unsustainable. The Democrats “public option” will probably make that problem even worse, which is why the only sustainable solution is a national health system, with health insurance companies selling supplemental coverage. Structured properly the health insurance companies would probably agree with the implementation of a national health system, because they understand that the rapid increase in prices of health care is unsustainable for their business.report abuse
