So I'm the cousin in withamgrad's comment that attended Florida State. To clear things up, I did dual enrollment (college and high school classes) during my senior year of high school. I went to Florida State University for a year after high school. I took a year off to have my beautiful daughter and went back to school last fall. I am currently on track to graduate with my AA degree in the fall after which I plan on attending the University of Central Florida starting in the Spring. So, Carl Witham is not the first person in his family to attend college (unless he doesn't consider his family in Florida family).

On another note, I wish him the best of luck.report abuse

I feel I need to clarify a comment made by Carl Witham. He is NOT the first person in our family to attend college. I am his aunt (his father's sister), and I graduated from college. So did another of his aunts (my oldest sister), and a cousin of his. Two other cousins are currently enrolled in college. His cousin Bethany (my daughter) attended Florida State University for a year before coming back home to be closer to family. I realize that we live in Florida and he may not be aware of the true facts, but his parents sure do.

I sincerely hope he gets to fulfill his dream of attending Wentworth Institute of Technology in Massachusetts. There are government grants ("free money")that are available. One just needs to know where to look. The first step is to fill out and submit the FAFSA form. The government will then let one know what financial aid is available. Grants do not need to be paid back. Student loans do, but the interest is very low. Whatever road in life Carl takes, I wish him all the best. I hope he knows that his WHOLE family is extremely proud of him and that we love him greatly!!!report abuse

SS, understood.

Blue Fish, sounds as though your children's parents have a solid handle on things. Let's hope they're able to do at least as well as the generation preceding them (I'm sure yours will!)report abuse

Sly - the cost of dental is also due to the high overhead they have when starting the practice. Over a hundred grand in student loan debt coupled with a quarter million or so in equipment means it's darn costly to have as much as a tooth removed!report abuse
