A techno geek friend of mine in another state set up his plasma HDTV to receive off air, satellite and cable HDTV. We spent an afternoon and evening together comparing the quality of the pictures on PBS, the only channel at that time available on all 3 sources. The off air and satellite images were identical and impressive. The cable was significantly degraded, although better than the non-HD channels. Our limited research showed that off air and satellite quality are essentially identical. Cable should be as good, but only if you have optical cable directly to your home. Some areas of the country have optical to the street (as my friend did) but almost no one has optical cable to the home - as it should be.
TV via DSL (phone lines) was not available at the time. Phone lines are now optical to the home in his area but circumstances have changed and he has not opted to test this service. I am not aware of any optical phone service being available here in Maine. DSL is not available to em.
Bottom line: In spite of all the petitions we signed at the drive in movie theaters in the 60's and 70's, pay TV is here to stay. The choice is yours. Make the choice that works best for you.report abuse
