Its too easy to get welfare bennies in Maine. No work requirements and little oversight by DHHS. In Georgia and New York they are onto the scammers and they make them tow the line. No so Maine. As long as we keep paying they are gonna be showing up. Stop the maddness. Do we drug test welfare recipients? Do we give out bennies to convicted felons? Do we have a work requirement, community service, anything to encourgae a work ethos?report abuse

My point is if you can settle antwhere in this country, why here? Thats all. The answer is obvious to any person who is honest with themselves. Gee, I'm a native Mainer, and as soon as my obligations to ederly parents is sadly ended, I'm out of here!report abuse

We all know someone who abused the system...I had a baby @ a very young age, but I NEVER collected welfare. The father & I both worked, we paid for the entire pregnancy, delivery, hospital bill, & any expense ourselves. I was fortunate to have adequate child care so that I could finish school. We were poor, but we were proud. Our home was OURS, not bought & paid for by the state. So I get REALLY angry when I read or hear that a girl is pregnant, so she MUST apply for welfare & quit school. If "Father Unknown" was not allowed to be used on the birth certificates, I guarantee that the welfare rate for young unmarried teenage girls would drop & child support from these young "boys" would go up. Working after school & weekends to support YOUR baby should be mandatory.report abuse
