This is the third year in a five-year study to inventory Maine's lynx population. So far, the IFW biologists have handled 28 lynx and radio-collared 15. The team recommended no trapping in any township that intersects a lynx protection zone - a circular area, five miles in radius, centered on any lynx sign or observation that has been documented within the last 10 years.report abuse

Maine Times - February 1, 2001

Under pressure from deer hunters and trappers, the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has rejected its biologists' recommendation to retain and strengthen a ban on snaring to protect the threatened Canada lynx. The rules for the winter of 2001 will permit snaring, as well as shooting over bait and chasing with dogs, to reduce the number of coyotes, which prey on deer.

The situation has raised questions about IFW's interest in protecting the lynx, the subject of an on-going study by its biologists. "IFW has a long history of letting the politics of loud interest groups override biology," said Michael Kellett, executive director of Restore, one of the groups suing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for downgrading the lynx from its former endangered status.report abuse

John Woodcock? No splinter jokes please.

Way to go. Woodcock lol give orders without any proof.

I would ignore his ruling. The federal Courts shouldn't single out one state, and poop orders of stupitidy, especially without the facts mam.report abuse
