Try checking out some rescues in the state also besides the shelters. You might be surprised at the number of rescues there are in the state of Maine.... volunteers dedicated to saving animals and making sure they are healthy and loved and re-homed... many are breed specific rescues. These rescues place animlas in foster homes.. love and care for them... operate solely off donations and whatever they can get from fundraisers. And remember... NEVER buy from a petstore.. they do sell dogs from puppy mills!

Want a pet to be part of your life? adopt!
The state of Maine should lead the nation and ban the sale of animals at pet stores. Unless they are from local shelters as in some NJ pet stores. Wouldn't it be marvelous if that bunch in Augusta would actually do something worth while for a change. Our four footed friends ask so very little and give so very much. It's the least we could do. They depend on us.report abuse

Never ever buy a puppy from a national chain! They all come from puppy mills regardless of what they claim. You may think you're "rescuing" the poor puppy, but all you are actually doing is perpetuating the business by buying their products!

Search out a responsible breeder (visit their facilities) or go to your local human society.

You think puppy mills are not places of horrofic nature? then i suggest go to the following URL
