I am proud of Gardiner for adopting this tough policy. I agree with some of the post about mandatory counseling or treatment before a readmittance hearing to come back to school. Everyone makes mistakes, it is what they do to after the mistake is made that shows their character. If they enter some treatment program or community service program to get help and then give help, it think that would show the board that they are readY to return to school. I hope this sends a clear message about zero tolerance in our schools. Instead of parents defending their law/rule breaking kids, they should be looking to get them all the help they need now, not later.report abuse

I agree with Flatbusted on the comment about how we seem to criminalize all these trivial things. Frankly, we have treated riding in the back of a pickup and riding your bike without a helmet as more serious crimes than bringing drugs to school. From the sounds of the newspaper article, we are finally going to treat kids with drugs as the serious offense that it is! I feel bad for those schools that slap kids on the wrist for drug possession, treating it like it's no big thing. That is why kids grow into adults who feel like drug use is ok.report abuse

Hell, as it is, they can't even bring aspirin to school. Look at the rules 30 years ago and ask yourselves if "protecting" them from themselves has made anything better. Miss bouncing around in the flatbed of a pick-up or riding your bicycle without a helmut anyone?report abuse

I think that all schools in the state should adopt this policy and hold true to it. You can make exceptions for anyone.... As far as parents or adults with alcohol and drugs on school property, they should be arrested and sent to jail. I do like the idea of community service as part of the process to return to school. If they wont do the community service I'm sure they will continue the behavior. School should be a privelge not a right. Kudo's to Gardiner..report abuse
