With the buildup on Pinckham Cove on Great Pond, code enforcement officers would have prevented the cutting of trees at the water's edge, and the riduculous McMansions. This summer, in a matter of a week, one McMansion in Pinckham Cove (built 2 years ago), went from a natural forested setting to a beautiful sodded lawn, all the way to the water's edge. This is not bad, until you realize that this lawn will have to be chemically treated to retain its lush and green appearance. DEP and COE cooperation is needed to minimize the harmful effect of this type of build-up as this build-up IS harmful to the lake and the watershed, if it remains unchecked.report abuse

Most solutions for water quality problems are based completely or in part on Maine Department of Environmental Protection’s opinions.

It is very important in the real world to understand the Maine DEP, in many cases, is staffed by people who’s ego is much bigger than their ability.

In some cases like China Lake that has lead to huge problems see DEPU.ORG.

For over thirty years now the DEP has moved China Lake AWAY from a natural environment to one that fits DEP license needs and DEP employee career goal protection requirements.

Be very careful about what you rely on from the DEP (opinion wise) when you take actions that have economic or long term goals and effects.

Keep in mind the DEP keeps the hearts, opinions and minds of many professional people in Maine in it’s camp through grants that are funneled through the DEP from the taxpayers in Maine. That buys a lot of loyalty from a lot of places including local governments, colleges and other departments of Maine government.

Take it from me, a proud tree hugging environmentalists, the Maine DEP is not what it seems to be.report abuse
